Pénurie de kérosène : le scénario d'avions cloués au sol se rapproche
Could planes be grounded due to a lack of fuel? The risk of a kerosene shortage grows daily with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, though no one knows exactly when or where tanks will run dry. Asia, and to a lesser extent Europe, are two continents heavily dependent on Middle Eastern oil and refineries for their supply. Europe normally imports half of its jet fuel from Gulf countries. At what point will fuel stocks be so low that flights must be canceled? Opinions vary."The situation could become systemic in the next three to four weeks. So we could see drastic flight reductions in Europe as early as May and June," Rystad Energy economist Claudio Galimberti stated Tuesday on American network CNBC. He mentioned flights already canceled for this reason, while the European Commission, on the same day, sought to be reassuring."There is no evidence of fuel shortages in the European Union at the moment," Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen replied in Brussels. As to whether there would be shortages and when, she remained vague: "Supply problems could arise in the near future, particularly for aviation fuels."On April 9, Airports Council International (ACI) Europe wrote to the European Commission that shortages would begin in "three weeks," meaning early May, if tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz had not resumed by then. International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol also predicted shortages in Europe "perhaps in early May."TotalEnergies has warned that if Middle Eastern oil continues to be blocked into June, it will not be able to supply fuel to everyone. "If this war and this blockade last more than three months, we will start to face serious supply problems for certain products like kerosene," its CEO Patrick Pouyanné said Monday in Washington.
