Syrie: un dignitaire religieux chiite tué près de Damas
A Shiite religious dignitary from the Sayyeda Zeinab mausoleum near Damascus was killed Friday in a bomb explosion, Syrian state television announced, adding that an investigation is underway.
The imam of the mausoleum, Farhan Hassan al-Mansour, "was killed in a bomb explosion" in the area of the shrine, the television reported.
Syria's highest Shiite spiritual authority also reported on its Facebook page the death of the dignitary, "in the explosion of a bomb targeting his car".
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) considered it an "assassination", without specifying who was responsible, but indicating that a "bomb had been thrown at the car" of the dignitary.
The area of the Sayyeda Zeinab mausoleum, revered by Shiites, was, before the fall of Bashar al-Assad's power at the end of 2024, a stronghold of pro-Iranian groups allied with him.
Since the rise to power of a Sunni Islamist coalition, the Shiite minority, estimated at around 300,000 people and considered close to the fallen power, has expressed fears.
In July, a Shiite dignitary was shot dead in the Homs region of central Syria.
President Ahmad al-Sharaa pledged to protect minorities, but massacres of Alawites occurred in March 2025 and bloody clashes with Druze fighters took place in July 2025.
