Tenerife: Advisor to a former Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau arrested in a corruption and drug trafficking case

Spanish police arrested Mohamed Jamil Derbah, special advisor to former Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau Rui Duarte de Barros, in Tenerife on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, as part of a wide-ranging investigation into an alleged corruption and drug trafficking network also involving members of the Spanish law enforcement.

According to a spokesperson for the national police, nine people were arrested during an operation conducted by the internal affairs division. Among them were two retired police officers and one active-duty officer, all suspected of having collaborated with the criminal group.

Following the arrest, a court in Tenerife ordered Derbah, a Lebanese national residing on the island, to be held in pretrial detention without bail. The eight other suspects were released pending possible charges.

Investigators consider Derbah to be the alleged leader of the network, although no official details have yet been made public on the extent of the organization or on the alleged links between the suspects and the security forces.

A political advisor with a controversial profile

Derbah had been appointed in 2024 as a special assistant to former Prime Minister Rui Duarte de Barros, as well as a permanent member of the International Relations and Trade Committee. The Prime Minister's office did not respond to requests for comment regarding his arrest. He could not be reached for comment.

This is not the first time Mohamed Jamil Derbah has been the subject of an investigation in Spain. In 2001, Reuters reported his arrest in the Canary Islands in a timeshare fraud case.

This operation had affected several British and German citizens, and the authorities at the time had mentioned possible links with the Lebanese group Hezbollah and the Syrian Shiite movement Amal, without any subsequent convictions being reported.

Investigators at the time believed that Derbah was operating under the direction of John Palmer, a British multimillionaire sentenced to eight years in prison in London in 2001 for fraud and murdered in 2015.

Spanish police have not provided any details on the exact charges or the evidence collected, stating only that the investigation is ongoing.
