An investigation for attempted poisoning has been opened, while the father remains in intensive care.
They were on vacation in Turkey. A couple from Germany and their two children were visiting Örtakoy, a popular tourist area of Istanbul, when they bought food from a street vendor. The meal proved fatal for the mother and her two children, aged 3 and 6, who succumbed to food poisoning. The father is reportedly in intensive care, according to Turkish media and authorities.
Four people have been arrested in connection with the investigation into suspected poisoning, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunç announced on the X platform.
Local media are pointing the finger at mussels bought from a street vendor and stuffed potatoes, known as "kumpirs," a popular street food, eaten in the tourist district of Örtakoy on the European side of the Bosphorus. "As part of the investigation, samples were taken from the places where the family ate, and four managers and waiters were arrested," according to Yilmaz Tunç.
The restaurant where the family reportedly dined has been sealed off, according to the DHA news agency. The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for stricter health and safety inspections.
