A 33-year-old man fatally shot one of his neighbors while practicing with a firearm he had purchased for Christmas, according to ABC News. The man, Cody Wayne Adams, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, the source reports.
According to information released by authorities, the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, December 25. The victim, whose identity has not been released but who is believed to be "an elderly woman," was holding a baby in her left arm when she heard gunshots. Her family, who were with her, reportedly heard her "remark that someone had received a new gun for Christmas" before saying "ouch" and collapsing.
Bail set at $100,000
A bullet struck her in the right arm and penetrated her ribcage. Despite the rapid intervention of emergency services, she did not survive.
Police conducted a neighborhood canvass, which led them to the home of Cody Wayne Adams, located approximately 500 meters from the victim's residence. The 33-year-old man reportedly spent the afternoon practicing shooting in his backyard.
When questioned by officers, Cody Wayne Adams explained that he had recently bought himself a Glock 45 automatic pistol for Christmas and had used it to shoot a can of Red Bull in his backyard. When law enforcement informed him that the shots could have caused the victim's death, the 30-year-old reportedly began to cry.
At his initial court appearance on Friday, Adams' bail was set at $100,000 (approximately €84,000). A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 26. According to the Gun Violence Archive website, more than 14,000 people, not counting suicides, will have been killed by firearms in the United States by 2025.
