“Une chute vertigineuse”: la popularité de Trump auprès de la Génération Z dégringole à un rythme record
Recent polls show that President Donald Trump's popularity among young Americans has plummeted in just a few months. And this could have serious political consequences.
CNN data analyst Harry Enten sums up the situation in a few words: “Donald Trump is in freefall with Generation Z (Americans aged 18 to 29).” The young people who initially trusted him at the beginning of his second term are increasingly turning away from him.
This phenomenon is clearly visible in his “net approval rating” among young voters: the difference between the proportion of those who support him and those who reject him. In February, barely a month into his second term, Trump had a 10-point approval rating. Today, it's at -32. A precipitous drop of more than 40 points. “This is an extremely volatile group,” explains Enten. “And they have now clearly turned away from Trump.”
Independents
However, caution is advised. While Democrats are gaining ground with Generation Z, their support is far from guaranteed. Gen Z is more independent than any other generation. 56% of those surveyed spontaneously declared themselves neutral if they were not forced to choose a party. This means that many young voters are now turning to the Democrats, primarily out of dissatisfaction with Trump, without necessarily having made a long-term commitment to the party.
For Democrats, this is, at first glance, a reason to rejoice: Trump is losing young voters and the party is gaining ground. But it's also a warning. Anyone who wants to retain the favor of Gen Z will have to constantly strive to win them over. Today, the trend favors the Democrats. But with this generation, the situation could just as quickly (re)shift.
