Une Iranienne, condamnée à mort pour avoir tué un mari violent épousé alors qu’elle était enfant, a été graciée

Iran has released a woman sentenced to death for the murder of her abusive husband whom she was forced to marry as a child, human rights activists and Iranian authorities said Friday.

Iranian authorities have confirmed the release of Goli Kouhkan, 25, who was imprisoned in the northern province of Golestan.

Her conviction was overturned this week following an agreement with the family of the abusive husband.

Goli Kouhkan, a member of the Baloch minority and undocumented, was to be executed for the 2018 murder of her abusive husband, according to human rights organizations.

“Blood price”

According to the Norway-based NGO Iran Human Rights (IHR), she escaped execution and was released after the payment of “blood money,” a practice permitted by Iranian Sharia law, which was used to compensate the husband’s family.

According to the head of the Golestan court, Heydar Asiabi, quoted by Iranian state television, she was released on Thursday. The television station published a photo of her, wearing a chador, from behind, alongside officials.

UN human rights experts last week called on Iran to suspend the execution of the young woman.

Forced into marriage at 12 to her cousin, she gave birth to her son at 13, according to UN experts, who specified that this farm worker suffered physical and psychological violence for several years.

In May 2018, when she was 18, “her husband beat her and her five-year-old son. After calling a relative for help, an altercation broke out, which resulted in her husband’s death,” experts said.

1,426 people hanged in 2025

Mai Sato, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, welcomed “a life saved”, but denounced the fact that in Iran domestic violence and forced child marriage “are not criminalized”.

According to IHR, more than 40 women were executed in Iran in 2025. Among them were many victims of child marriage or domestic violence.

Death sentences have increased this year in Iran, with at least 1,426 people hanged, according to IHR's count at the end of November.
