Arrestation de Karim Xrum Xax : Les défenseurs des droits humains exigent sa libération
The arrest of activist Abdou Karim Guèye, better known as Karim Xrum Xax, which took place on Monday, January 12 at Independence Square during a demonstration by people with disabilities, has sparked strong reactions within civil society.
Two major figures in the defense of human rights, Seydi Gassama and Alioune Tine, spoke out to denounce this arrest and demand his immediate release.
The executive director of Amnesty International/Senegal, Seydi Gassama, stressed the need to guarantee civil liberties. “We demand the release of activist Karim Xrum Xax and respect for the right to peaceful assembly. Participation in a peaceful demonstration, even if undeclared or unauthorised, should not be subject to legal prosecution in a democratic state,” he complained.
For his part, Alioune Tine, founder of Afrikajom Center, denounced a serious violation of fundamental rights. “Karim Xrum Xax must be released immediately and unconditionally. Exercising the fundamental freedoms recognized by the Constitution of Senegal is not a crime. On the contrary, obstructing them through arbitrary arrests and detentions is far more problematic.”
