Justice : Le collectif du peuple Askanwi dénonce des détentions « arbitraires » et appelle à un « Extra Sitting»
The executive branch maintains a "manipulated" justice system characterized by "inconsistent prosecutions." This is according to the Askanwi People's Collective, which strongly criticized the executive branch's actions at a press conference on Thursday, January 29, 2026, particularly targeting Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and the Minister of Justice, Yassine Fall.
The group questioned "Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko's repeated attacks and open contempt for magistrates," arguing that such statements send "a dangerous signal for the independence of the judiciary." According to the colleagues of activist Abdou Karim Guèye "Xrum Xakh," these stances weaken an institution that should remain immune to all political pressure.
Criticizing the Minister of Justice, the group is demanding the resignation of Yassine Fall, arguing that she "seems to be striving to justify selective procedures and prosecutions with variable geometry," a stance deemed incompatible with her sovereign mission.
Prolonged detentions and disputed evidence
The citizens' movement also drew attention to the situation of several political actors and public figures in the opposition, whom it considers victims of excessive judicial decisions. The group specifically cites the Farba Ngom case, which it believes now falls under the umbrella of human rights. It also mentions the cases of Moustapha Diop, Ndèye Sophie Gladima, Ndeye Sally Diop, Maodo Malick Mbaye, Abdou Karim Mbacké, and Pape Malick Ndour, all of whom, according to the group, remain in detention despite the clear lack of evidence.
Regarding the use of electronic bracelets, the group denounces what it calls their "indiscriminate distribution," citing the cases of Badara Gadiaga, Ismaïla Madior Fall, Lat Diop, and Ahmed Ndoye. According to the group, these measures "are more akin to restraining opposition members than to proportionate legal measures."
Faced with what he considers serious and repeated abuses, the coordinator of the collective's activities, Abdou Karim Gueye, is calling for a citizen mobilization during an "Extra Sitting" planned for February 14, 2026, in Ouagou Niayes. The objective, he states, is to reiterate that "Senegal cannot accept a justice system that is manipulated, selective, and politicized."
