«République de Casamance» : Amidou Djiba retourne sa veste face aux gendarmes
Amidou Djiba, declared spokesperson for the political wing of the MFDC/Mangoukoro Section, made a U-turn in front of investigators from the statements that led to his arrest by the Research Section and indictment by the senior judge for conspiracy against the authority of the State and the integrity of the territory, participation in an insurrectional movement and criminal association.
According to Libération, which reported the information, he reportedly retracted his remarks when confronted by the Colobane police. "The accused claimed that by calling the head of state a 'political newborn,' he had no intention of offending him. According to him, the term merely reflected the President's youth and his recent entry into political life."
Furthermore, the newspaper continues, Amidou Djiba declared that "as a Serer, the President is for him, a Diola, a cousin and that he has great admiration for him."
Continuing his plea, the sixty-year-old, "regarding the flags waved and the songs sung in the videos [suggesting emblems of the 'Republic of Casamance'], he maintained that there was never any question of proclaiming the independence of Casamance or of forming a government or declaring a State. Amidou Djiba swears that he was unaware that his statements could be interpreted as an attack on the Republic."
Ultimately, Libération sums up, the MFDC activist "expressed his regrets and asked for clemency from the courts."
