Trois Nigérians condamnés à trois mois de prison avec sursis pour séjour irrégulier
The Mbour High Court sentenced three Nigerian nationals to three months' suspended imprisonment for illegally residing in Senegal. They are Chinonso Samson Ibeh (35 years old), Gérald Chidera Emenike (27 years old), and Victor Chukwumeucheya Ngene (28 years old).
The defendants have been living in Senegal for several years, seven years for the last two.
In court, Gérald Emenike and Victor Ngene clarified that they previously had residence permits, but that these had long since expired.
For his part, Chinonso Samson Ibeh maintains that he has never held a residence permit.
The prosecutor, believing that the facts were established, requested the strict application of the law.
The defense, led by Mr. Sène, pleaded for leniency from the court:
"Mr. President, I ask you to pardon them. They are victims of a system that is often misunderstood. Many of our compatriots abroad are experiencing the same situation. I ask your jurisdiction to grant them a reprieve so that they can regularize their situation," Mr. Sène requested.
The court followed this request by handing down a three-month suspended prison sentence and ordering their expulsion from Senegalese territory.
Furthermore, eight other defendants, also prosecuted for illegal stay, are still awaiting their trial, which has been postponed several times due to a lack of a Bambara language translator.
