Affaire Babacar Fall et Maïmouna Ndour Faye : “La liberté de la presse doit être respectée” (Nina Penda Faye - CORED)
Nina Penda Faye, the communications officer for the Council for the Observation of Ethical and Professional Standards in the Media (CORED), spoke about the questioning of journalists Babacar Fall (RFM) and Maïmouna Ndour Faye (7TV).
Reached by phone by Seneweb, she stated: “The first thing to denounce is the fact that colleagues are being arrested by the defense and security forces. We are in a democracy, and in a democracy, respect for freedom of expression and freedom of the press must be paramount.”
For her, the authorities must remember that Senegal is not a totalitarian regime. “We are not a monarchy. The rules of democracy must be respected. This implies guaranteeing freedom of the press and of expression,” she said.
However, the CORED representative also calls on journalists to act responsibly and respect ethical and professional principles. “The Senegalese Press Code reminds us of our duties and rights. We must be careful not to break the law. Article 5 of the Press Code is very clear: journalists must respect national defense secrecy, the secrecy of investigations, and the secrecy of judicial proceedings,” explains Nina Penda Faye.
When asked whether a journalist has the right to give a fugitive a platform, Nina Penda Faye remains categorical: “The laws forbid violating these secrets. Colleagues must comply. Either you are a journalist or you are not. And if you choose to be a journalist, you respect the rules that govern our profession. If you decide to wear a political hat, that’s another matter.”
While calling for journalists to act responsibly, she urged the state to adopt a more respectful stance regarding the rights of media professionals. “There are other, more civilized ways to summon a journalist. Sending security forces into media outlets to arrest them is unacceptable.”
For CORED, the challenge is twofold: to preserve press freedom while strengthening the responsibility and credibility of Senegalese journalism.

La presse ne s'est jamais endormie mon cher mais elle s'est révélée incapable de contenir la déferlante du Jub Jubbal Jubbanti.
C'est si simple que ca. Le peuple est avec ce regime. Le peuple reclame que la presse soit nettoyee au Senegal. On a ue presse de mercenaires entretenu par des opposants voleurs milliardaires.
