Médias sous surveillance : le CNRA adopte une posture de « tolérance zéro »
In Dakar this Thursday, Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye, president of the National Audiovisual Regulatory Council (CNRA), announced a strict new approach to addressing media abuses. During a workshop bringing together editors and audiovisual program managers, he unveiled a "zero tolerance" policy aimed at protecting Senegal's fundamental values.
The CNRA intends to uphold key principles such as privacy, territorial integrity, cultural diversity, religious cohesion, and good morals. "From now on, no infringement will be tolerated. Firmness will be required," Mr. Ndiaye said, emphasizing that institutions, national unity, and all forms of diversity are also covered by the regulations.
Before imposing any sanctions, the regulatory body will prioritize education. "A general warning will be issued, in the hope that it will be enough to avoid more severe measures," the CNRA president specified.
He also denounced the irresponsible behavior of certain media players, whom he described as "mavericks," damaging the reputation of a press long hailed as one of the most credible in French-speaking Africa.
The CNRA also warns of the dangers posed by certain media abuses in border areas, particularly in Kédougou and Tambacounda, where they could foster the establishment of jihadist movements. Mamadou Oumar Ndiaye pointed to the lack of resources and the absence of regional relays, which complicate the monitoring of content broadcast locally. He calls for increased resources to deploy decentralized antennas and surveillance tools, similar to what is being done in other countries on the continent.
