Liberté de la presse : TAS invite les journalistes à s’ériger en bouclier pour faire valoir leurs droits
The recent arrests of 7TV director Maimouna Ndour Faye and RFM editor-in-chief Babacar Fall continue to elicit reactions from the political class, in particular. Thierno Alassane Sall, president of the Republic of Values - Réewum Ngor (RDV), who was in Ziguinchor for political activities, addressed the matter.
"You saw me in the field, with the journalists, at the central police station and then at the Ouakam gendarmerie brigade to offer my support to Maïmouna Ndour Faye. For me, it was an extremely important testing moment. I say this for you, young journalists, and for all journalists. When Maïmouna Ndour Faye was arrested, there was a kind of panic and some started saying that she should never have been arrested."
However, the action taken by the editor-in-chief of RFM changed all predictions and sparked a completely different debate, according to the MP. "I commend Babacar Fall's tremendous gesture in stating that we have the right to invite whomever we want, within the sole limits prescribed by law. Not because the government wants or doesn't want us to," continued Thierno Alassane Sall.
Thus, for him, a right is not something that is granted. "It is not up to Diomaye, the Minister of the Interior or the Prime Minister to give us our right. We have it. They themselves claimed the right to supposedly oppose Macky Sall. And that created a trigger," stated the leader of the RDV.
He urged journalists to refuse to have their right to inform taken away or removed: "This is a moment for you, journalists, for the Senegalese people, to tell them that those who seek to 'use' the justice system or hide behind the justice system or force to deny you your rights, you must refuse. That's what Babacar Fall did, and it was a turning point. Many journalists know that ultimately, they were right."
