Interventions policières dans les Médias: Le Synpics réagit
The Union of Information and Communication Professionals of Senegal (SYNPICS) expressed its deep concern following two police raids on October 28 and 29, 2025, at Senegalese newsrooms. These operations targeted journalists carrying out their duties, including Maïmouna Ndour Faye of 7tv and Babacar Fall of RFM, who was arrested after exchanging messages via WhatsApp with Madiambal Diagne, a media executive subject to an international arrest warrant.
SYNPICS believes that these events raise serious questions about respect for the fundamental principles guaranteeing press freedom in Senegal. It reiterates that this freedom is enshrined in the Constitution and reinforced by international instruments ratified by the State.
The union emphasizes that "the execution of an arrest warrant must in no case infringe upon the rights of third parties, unless expressly provided for by law. Questioning a person being prosecuted falls under the right to information, as long as it does not constitute obstruction of justice or incitement to violence," specifies Synpics.
SYNPICS insists that the practice of journalism should not be equated with complicity, but recognized as an essential democratic mission. It calls on the authorities to demonstrate transparency in establishing the facts and to rigorously respect judicial procedures.
In conclusion, the union urges public authorities to guarantee an environment conducive to free, responsible, and safe journalism. Information, it reminds us, is a fundamental right, not a crime.
