Fête de l’Ascension : ce jeudi, l’Église célèbre la montée du Christ au Ciel
The Feast of the Ascension commemorates the ascent of Jesus Christ to the Father, forty days after his Resurrection, as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles: “Before their very eyes he was taken up, and a cloud hid him from their sight” (Acts 1:9). It marks the fulfillment of his earthly mission and the opening of a new hope for believers: “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Celebrated on the Thursday following the sixth Sunday of Easter, the Ascension reminds us that Christian life is called to rise towards God, in faith and hope, in preparation for Pentecost.
In the dioceses of southern Senegal, this feast takes on a special dimension: thousands of children receive communion for the first time. This moment of grace unites the joy of Easter with the entry of the youngest into full participation in the Eucharist, strengthening the vitality of local communities and the fervor of families.
Thus, the Ascension is not only the memory of a biblical event, but also a living celebration that continues to transform parishes, rooting faith in new generations and preparing the faithful to welcome the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
