[Lumières de la Foi] Mgr André Guèye, l'archevêque philosophe qui prône le dialogue des cœurs

In this new installment of "Lights of Faith," Seneweb focuses on a pastor whose life story is a living testament to devotion and humility. From his roots in Mont-Rolland to the seat of the Archdiocese of Dakar, Bishop André Guèye embodies a Church of closeness, dialogue, and knowledge. Discover the spiritual and intellectual journey of the man who, after leading the Diocese of Thiès, now carries the mission of guiding the Christian community of the capital with wisdom and fraternity.

Bishop André Guèye's life is in keeping with the tradition of pastors who dedicate their lives to proclaiming the Gospel and serving God's people. Through his priestly and episcopal journey, he bears witness to a profound faith and a constant commitment to serving the Church in Senegal.

A vocation born in faith

Born on January 6, 1967 in Pallo-Youga, in the department of Tivaouane, Bishop André Guèye grew up in an environment where the Christian faith held an essential place. Baptized at the parish of Our Lady of the Assumption in Mont-Rolland, he felt the Lord's call very early on and decided to dedicate his life to the priesthood.

His formation began in the seminaries of Ngasobil and Thiès, before he entered the major seminary of Sébikotane. He then continued his philosophical and theological studies at the seminary of Djibelor, in the diocese of Ziguinchor, and later at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome. Ordained a priest on June 27, 1992, in the Cathedral of Saint Anne in Thiès, he received the mission to serve the Church and accompany the faithful on their journey of faith.

A pastoral ministry close to the people

From the early years of his priesthood, Bishop André Guèye distinguished himself through his close ties with Christian communities. He first served as vicar at the Holy Cross Parish in Bambey from 1992 to 1997, then at Saint Anne's Cathedral in Thiès. Later, as parish priest of Holy Cross in Bambey, he became known for his pastoral care and his availability to the faithful. His priestly mission was characterized by listening, spiritual guidance, and attention to the growth of faith within Christian communities.

Alongside his ministry, he pursued studies in philosophy at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, where he earned a master's degree and then a DEA (Diploma of Advanced Studies). This intellectual training enabled him to contribute to the formation of future priests. From 2006 to 2012, he taught philosophy at the Saint John Vianney Major Seminary in Brin, in the diocese of Ziguinchor, thus participating in the human, intellectual, and spiritual formation of new generations of servants of the Church.

A bishop dedicated to mission and peace

On January 18, 2013, he was appointed Bishop of Thiès and received episcopal consecration on May 25 of the same year. As pastor of the diocese, he dedicated himself to the mission of proclaiming the Gospel, strengthening the faith of the faithful, and promoting communion within the Church. His episcopal ministry is characterized by a deep commitment to the Word of God, while remaining attentive to the social and cultural realities of the country.

Since January 2023, he has also been serving as apostolic administrator of Saint-Louis.

A peacemaker, Bishop André Guèye is committed to promoting fraternity and social cohesion in a country marked by interreligious dialogue. He often reminds us that religious diversity is an asset for Senegal and invites believers to be witnesses of peace, justice, and solidarity.

A new mission at the Archdiocese of Dakar

Since May 3, 2025, Archbishop André Guèye has been called to a new mission: leading the Archdiocese of Dakar, succeeding Archbishop Benjamin Ndiaye. At the head of this Church, he is called to guide the faithful, encourage the evangelizing mission, and support Christian communities in their witness of faith within society. A man of prayer and a servant of the Gospel, Archbishop André Guèye embodies the image of an archbishop close to his people.
