Un professeur de mathématiques et linguiste traduit la Bible en wolof : Mamadou Diop entre dans l’histoire culturelle du Sénégal
“Mamadou Diop, a mathematics professor and linguist, dedicated his life to establishing the Wolof language as a major translation language.” The Gloria concert, presented at the Doudou Ndiaye Coumba Rose National Grand Theater, transcended its artistic function to become a moment of national remembrance. The evening paid solemn tribute to Mamadou Diop, a mathematics professor and linguist, the principal architect of the Wolof translation of the Bible, whose forthcoming publication will mark a major contribution to our cultural heritage.
On the stage of the Grand Théâtre, artistic creation, tribute and transmission were combined around the figure of Mamadou Diop, an exceptional linguist and the main architect of the translation of the Bible into the Wolof language.
The tribute, delivered with emotion by his daughter, the artist Agsila, recalled the unique journey of a man whose scientific rigor shaped linguistic work of rare exacting standards. Mamadou Diop, a mathematics professor by training, devoted more than twenty-five years to this monumental undertaking, part of a project initiated in 1963 and continued by several generations of translators.
A film shown to the public recounted this extraordinary intellectual adventure. Fluent in seven languages, including Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic, Mamadou Diop worked to establish faithful correspondences between the original biblical texts and a classical, precise, and poetic Wolof. His approach was praised for its scholarly depth as well as its cultural significance.
The presence of his wife, known to the public through the film "Vieux Diop," and of the Diop family, gave this tribute a profoundly human dimension, marked by an emotion shared by everyone in the room. A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the upcoming release of the Bible in Wolof, which generated considerable interest.
The book is currently being printed in South Korea, at a specialized printing company, before being shipped to Dakar. This South Korean contribution is presented as an act of international cultural cooperation in service of Senegal's linguistic heritage.
While the Christian community was well represented, the event attracted a much wider audience. Muslim scholars, intellectuals, and cultural figures were keen to praise the linguistic and intellectual value of the translation. The poet and writer Seex Waali Ndaw, in particular, highlighted the potential connections between sacred texts and the Wolof scholarly tradition.
Translated into a language of great poetic richness, the biblical text in Wolof is now perceived as a major heritage work, destined to become a lasting part of the cultural and intellectual history of Senegal.
Mamadou Diop, a life dedicated to the language
Mamadou Diop was a leading Senegalese professor of mathematics and linguist. His scientific rigor profoundly influenced his approach to translation and linguistic research. Involved early on in the project to translate the Bible into Wolof, initiated in 1963, he became one of its central figures, bringing a rare level of expertise to the treatment of classical and poetic Wolof.
Fluent in seven languages, including Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic, he worked to establish faithful translations between the original texts and the Wolof language, with a precision informed by his scientific training. After twenty-five years of intensive work, Mamadou Diop completed his mission.
He was called back to God in 2021, three days after completing this work, leaving Senegal with a major linguistic, intellectual and cultural legacy.

Ton pseudo, te va comme un gant et tu peux le bouffer. Parce que tu te considères musulman, tu accables ce Monsieur dont tu ne dois rien savoir à part ce que l’on veut bien te dire de lui ?
Il faut être petit d’esprit pour « raisonner » comme toi. Par ailleurs, il n’a peut-être pas fait de traduction dans le domaine des sciences, mais il a certainement donné à plein d’élèves le goût des mathématiques. J’aimerais d’ailleurs savoir si ce Monsieur n’a pas été prof dans un certain collège de Thiès. En effet, j’y ai eu un prof de maths de la même identité et adepte du wolof bien parlé. C’était dans les années 75. Et puis, peut-être parce que lui a commencé par traduire la bible, il donnera l’idée et l’envie à quelqu’un d’autre de se consacrer au Coran. Si cela arrive, n’oublie pas de lui dire merci. Je crois qu’au Sénégal il y a aussi des Diop chrétiens qui eux sont contents de leur concitoyen qui leur facilite la tâche.

Il faut traduire la bible et le coran en langue locales et communiquer avec Dieu de quelque chose que nous comptenons
Qui vous empêchent à traduire les textes du journal officiel, les livres de maths, de pysique, de chimie, de technologie, d informatique... ?

Et a-t-il même besoin du langage pour communiquer avec nous ? Si nous sommes limités, Lui qui ne l'est pas n'est en principe pas soumis à nos contraintes. Wala , si ?

La parole de Dieu dit dans apocalypse 5 verset 9 que le Seigneur Jésus a racheté pour Dieu par son sang des hommes de toute tribu, de toute langue( y compris les wolofs qui auront accepté le Seigneur Jésus-Christ ) de tout peuple et de toute nation. Mais la parole de Dieu dit aussi dans le même livre au chapitre 21 verset 8 : Que les laches, les incrédules, les abominables, les meurtriers, les débauchés, les magiciens, les idolatres et tous les menteurs leur part sera dans l'étang ardent de feu et de soufre ce qui est la seconde mort.
Gloire à Dieu encore pour ce travail extraordinaire qui restera dans les anales de l'histoire. Que cette parole touche la bonne terre et qu' elle ne retourne point à Dieu sans avoir accomplit son effet.
