Located in the Fatick region, the island of Mar Soulou is much more than just a Serer village. Founded by the patriarch Kanguel, this community of 64 concessions is distinguished by the strength of its ancestral traditions and a mysticism that continues to shape the daily lives of its inhabitants.

In Mar Soulou, time seems to stand still, giving way to the sacred. The spiritual heart of the village houses the home of the founder, Kanguel, located beneath a tree of rare and impressive shape. It is in this space imbued with mystery that locals and visitors alike come, guided by Oulimata Diome, the guardian of the totems, to entrust their concerns to the spirit of the founder.

An invisible guardian with winged signs

Although he has passed away, Kanguel still watches over his land. According to oral tradition, when he wishes to deliver a crucial message, he appears in the form of a bird with a distinctive warning call. He usually manifests himself at the home of Oulimata Diaw or Lamine Mané, a member of the Sagnanème family, the direct lineage of the founder.

However, this protection comes with absolute rigor. The founder tolerates no deviation from the established rules: anyone who breaks the rules is subject to severe mystical sanctions, according to the elders.

A sanctuary closed to uniforms

The village cultivates a striking peculiarity: it hosts no official authorities and imposes strict restrictions on people wearing uniforms. This rejection of modern state symbols underscores the island's desire to preserve its spiritual and traditional sovereignty.

Besides these prohibitions, Mar Soulou is renowned for the healing properties of its soil. The village sand is said to be a miracle cure for snake bites and wounds caused by bladed weapons. Bakary Faye, who benefited from this treatment, testifies to it fervently.

Through the stories of Lamine Mané, Oulimata Diome and Issa Thiam, this report plunges us into the secrets of a unique village, where the past and present intertwine under the protective and formidable shadow of Kanguel.

Pour être (plus) sérieux , Mané ak Diaw sont malins dé... Il protègent bien leur "kham kham ", leur secret, leur trésor.... Toutes les "ésotéries" font pareil...

Si on ne comprends pas la réalités de certaines pratiques coutumières de certains villages il faut se taire au lieu de les critiquer. Ces gens sont des musulmans et des chrétiens, mais ils ont leurs coutumes ancestrales qu'ils respectent de oeres en fils .

Certains sont vraiment des rigolos. Ils insultent leurs ancêtres, adoptent la foi des ancêtres d'autrui. Et c'est eux qui viennent insulter leurs frères qui respectent leurs ancêtres. Ce n'est pas étonnant que les arabes ne ratent aucune occasion pour les remettre à leur place de moins que rien
