Après la vasectomie, le STEOM : La nouvelle méthode réversible qui séduit déjà les hommes

In France, a team at the Lille University Hospital has just achieved a historic milestone by developing STEOM, the first-ever male intrauterine device (IUD). This non-hormonal and reversible device is designed to finally allow men to share the burden of contraception. Currently in clinical trials, it could be commercially available by 2033 if the results are positive.

A void that has been waiting to be filled for decades

Until now, male contraception options were limited to condoms for occasional protection or vasectomy, effective but perceived as permanent. Between these two options, the gap left the contraceptive burden falling heavily on women (pill, implant, female IUD), often with significant side effects. The Lille team therefore wanted to offer a simple, temporary, and reversible alternative to rebalance this responsibility within couples.

The operating mode of STEOM

The STEOM device works on a purely mechanical, non-hormonal basis. It is inserted in just fifteen minutes under local anesthesia through a small incision of about one centimeter in the scrotum. Once in place, it acts as a deflector, redirecting sperm so they can be naturally eliminated by the body. Without sperm in the ejaculate, the risk of pregnancy is eliminated. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, without stitches or bandages, and the device remains effective for up to three years.

Unlike a vasectomy, fertility returns as soon as the STEOM is removed. Researchers assure that the device does not affect libido, sexuality, or long-term fertility after its removal. This middle ground meets a growing demand from men who want a chosen and shared contraceptive commitment without the permanent nature of a traditional surgical procedure.

Si ça permet de baiser partout sans conséquence ça va faire fureur ! Trop bon business. Surtout sur notre continent dans lequel la sexualité est devenue très centrale.
