An innovative procedure combining mastectomy and breast reconstruction allows breast cancer patients to remove the tumor and reconstruct their breasts on the same day.

A medical revolution is underway. In the United States, patients with very early-stage breast cancer can now undergo a revolutionary new surgery that allows for a mastectomy and breast reconstruction in a single procedure.

Athaliah McPherson benefited from this technique after being diagnosed with stage 0 ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in multiple areas of her right breast during a routine mammogram. "I knew something was wrong," the hairstylist and mother of one told ABC News.

This precancerous lesion, which is not immediately dangerous, can develop into invasive cancer if left untreated. Unlike her aunt, who experienced numerous complications after a conventional mastectomy, she was able to avoid these problems thanks to the oncology team at the Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC) in New York (USA), which developed total breast reconstruction.

“The day after surgery, I was up and walking.”

This unique procedure allows for immediate removal of breast tissue and reconstruction, rather than two separate operations. To achieve this, the surgeon places the breast implants between the chest muscles for greater stability, reducing the risk of deformity, movement, infection, and fluid buildup. By preserving the muscles, the surgeon can also reduce pain, speed healing, and provide a more natural-looking result.

This method differs markedly from the traditional approach, which typically involves waiting several months or even a year after the mastectomy to perform the reconstruction. This delay contributes greatly to the emotional distress of patients.

Pedro Piccinini, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who heads the oncology team, emphasized that this operation offers "better results, a lower complication rate, a shorter hospital stay, and a lower overall cost." Furthermore, in most cases, the procedure is covered by health insurance, making it accessible to the greatest number of people.

"The day after surgery, I was up and walking. I'm 100 percent happy. I went back to work six weeks later," said Athaliah McPherson, who is currently in remission.

According to the professional, this method represents a significant change in breast cancer surgery, as improving physical appearance after treatment can have a positive effect on patients, who often become "more outgoing, maintain better relationships, and develop a better self-image." This contributes to better health outcomes and, in some cases, longer survival.
