Sécurité sanitaire : Le Sénégal déploie l'artillerie « One Health » pour anticiper les futures pandémies
Faced with the increasing number of emerging health threats, Senegal is accelerating its prevention strategy through the integrated "One Health" approach. At the closing ceremony of the One Health CRCF training at the Prime Minister's office, Professor N. Coumba Touré Kane reaffirmed that protecting populations now depends on the synergy between human, animal, and environmental health.
Co-organized by the Fann Regional Research and Training Center (CRCF) and the High National Council for Health Security (HCNSS-OH), with support from ANRS-MIE, this session marks a turning point in strengthening the national system. Professor Kane emphasized the critical evolution of risks, exacerbated by the resurgence of zoonoses and the impact of climate change.
“Recent health crises have shown that a curative response alone is insufficient. Prevention and early warning are now at the heart of health security,” he emphasized. This approach makes it possible to detect early warning signs and act upstream, before threats escalate into major health emergencies.
A territorial network for increased surveillance
The five-week training program brought together 26 professionals from 11 regions across the country. These experts are slated to lead the eight future One Health territorial hubs. The participants' profiles reflect the diversity of the threat, encompassing veterinary health, the environment, climate, territorial command, and civil society. According to Professor Kane, this multi-sectoral approach is essential to strengthening integrated epidemiological surveillance, improving early warning systems, and ensuring a coordinated response at both the local and national levels.
Participants' skills were strengthened in risk management, emergency preparedness, crisis communication, and community resilience. These are all crucial tools for mitigating the social and economic impact of epidemics. This vision aligns perfectly with the Senegal 2050 Agenda, which prioritizes the quality of human capital and the resilience of systems as absolute objectives of sustainable development.
The CRCF: a pillar of training despite the challenges
Since its creation in 2005, the CRCF has established itself as a key center with over 800 trained healthcare professionals. Although it receives no direct state funding, the center continues to implement public health policies through its technical and financial partnerships, working closely with national authorities.
In closing the ceremony, Professor N. Coumba Touré Kane congratulated the newly certified individuals, now members of the One Health Senegal Alumni network. They are expected to become the guardians of prevention in the field. "By investing in these skills, Senegal is strengthening its capacity to sustainably protect the health of its population in the face of current and future health crises," he concluded.
