Université Cheikh Anta Diop : Le Pr Moussa Seydi face au défi d’un futur sans pandémie
Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar is preparing for a significant moment in its academic calendar. For the opening of the 2025-2026 academic year, the institution has chosen an emblematic figure of Senegalese science, Professor Moussa Seydi, to deliver the prestigious inaugural lecture this Thursday, January 8, 2026. The chosen theme, "A Future Without a Pandemic? Lessons from Covid-19," resonates as a necessary reflection after the years of health crisis that have disrupted global balances.
Professor Seydi's selection was no accident. At the forefront from the very first case of coronavirus in Senegal in March 2020, this distinguished researcher shouldered the heavy responsibility of managing the clinical care of patients nationwide. Under his leadership, and despite limited resources compared to Western powers, Senegal achieved the remarkable feat of maintaining a remarkably low mortality rate. With fewer than 2,000 recorded deaths, the Senegalese healthcare system was cited as an example for its responsiveness and rigorous management of the pandemic.
At this high-level conference, the head of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department at Fann Hospital will share his expertise on the legacy of this crisis. He will analyze whether the world is now better equipped to anticipate new biological threats and what strategies to adopt to prevent history from repeating itself.
The Rector of UCAD, Professor Alioune Badara Kandji, invites the university community, the diplomatic corps, and the general public to attend this meeting, which will be held at the UCAD II Conference Center. Beyond its purely scientific aspect, this event will be an opportunity to pay tribute to a man whose humility and dedication have left a lasting impression.
A scientist of exceptional caliber, Professor Moussa Seydi is a respected figure far beyond the country's borders. Author of over 500 publications and an associate professor at the University of Washington, he has successfully transformed challenges into opportunities, notably by equipping Senegal with a modern and efficient infectious disease department. This inaugural lecture promises to be a pivotal moment of knowledge transfer, blending academic rigor with life lessons for future generations.
