Abdou Aziz Diop appelle à la protection des autorités religieuses face aux dérives des réseaux sociaux
Abdou Aziz Diop, a member of the Civil Forum and grandson of El Hadji Malick Sy, expressed his concern about the rising tensions between political actors and religious authorities in Senegal. He pointed to social media as the main factor contributing to these problems and called for stricter regulation to preserve the country's stability.
According to him, Senegal is distinguished by a rare historical and sociological uniqueness. "Senegal is an exceptional country because it is one of the few states where spiritual and temporal power coexist in a balanced way," he argues. This complementarity, he believes, constitutes one of the major foundations of national peace and stability.
Abdou Aziz Diop also points out that the Senegalese nation predates the state. "Before independence, a structured nation already existed, with recognized religious and traditional authorities," he explains. In his view, this precedence confers legitimacy on both state institutions and religious leaders, who are called upon to play a central role in social regulation.
However, recent days have been marked by verbal clashes and controversies between political figures and religious leaders, particularly on digital platforms. Abdou Aziz Diop considers this situation worrying, deploring the lack of restraint in public discourse.
“On social media, some people feel entitled to caricature and insult religious authorities without any restraint,” he denounced, describing this behavior as dangerous for social cohesion. He therefore called for respect for religious leaders, whom he considers pillars of Senegalese social stability.
In response to these abuses, Abdou Aziz Diop advocates for the adoption of a strengthened legal framework. He specifically suggests the implementation of a law protecting religious authorities, similar to Article 80 of the Penal Code, which addresses offenses against the head of state. Furthermore, he believes that regulating social media has become essential to prevent hate speech and attacks on the country's fundamental values.
For him, preserving harmony between the spiritual and the temporal remains a crucial issue for the future of Senegal.
