"We must constantly continue the process of decolonization. We must not think that it has stopped. We must be proud of our history, carry it forward in our daily lives, and not be ashamed to celebrate the people who enabled Senegal to achieve independence, including a significant figure, a person we cannot ignore: Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr Diop."
These words were spoken by the deputy governor of Thiès, in charge of administrative affairs, Georges Faye, who presided over the commemorative ceremony marking the 139th anniversary of the death of Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr Diop, in Thiès, this Tuesday, October 28.
"One cannot be in exile in one's homeland," our national hero said at one point, the deputy governor recalled, saying that he understood that "being in exile in one's homeland is simply not doing one's homework."
He also continued: "Citizens have rights just as they have duties. We must not be exiles in our homeland. We must not be foreigners in our own country. We must not be foreigners in our own country. Not being a foreigner means being an active citizen, that is, participating in everything that can improve the lives of our fellow citizens, it means respecting the rules of the common desire to live together."
Through this ceremony, Georges Faye indicated that "we are celebrating more than a hero, but liberation, inspiration, Lat Dior being a source of inspiration, of motivation for courage." He added: "We must not remain with our arms crossed, we must not tell ourselves that all the struggles have been carried out in our place, that we must do nothing more."
Governor Faye believes that "we must draw on our past to envision our future." "It won't help us if we proceed by forgetting, if we neglect our heroes, it won't help us. The best way to move forward, to build this country, is to value its past," he informs.
And to suggest: "We must lock ourselves in the past, but we must highlight it, bring our past to light, and rely on it to build the future. This is not inevitable. It is the set of actions we take today that will make the future a radiant success for Senegal and, beyond that, all of Africa.
