Déguerpissement à Thiès : Le cri du cœur des ouvriers automobiles
The Prefect of the department of Thiès, Mame Less Cabou, informed the population that systematic removal operations of vehicle wrecks and clearing of public space would be carried out from this Friday, October 31, throughout the city.
Less than 24 hours before this eviction, there is deep concern among the occupants of the public space, particularly the automotive workers, whose activity risks being paralyzed.
Faced with this threat, Abdoulaye Dieng, president of the Workers' Union in the Thiès region, made a poignant appeal to the Senegalese authorities. He stressed the need to find a lasting solution for the thousands of workers who could lose their jobs. Mr. Dieng emphasized the importance of their contribution to the national economy and their crucial role in training young people.
He asks the authorities to: identify the affected workers; relocate them (find them a new work site); and secure these workers by offering them viable alternatives.
“The workers are not asking for charity, but for their right to work, in dignity and safety,” stated Abdoulaye Dieng. He also pointed out that no resettlement site has been allocated to the workers of Thiès since 2004, leaving them “to fend for themselves.”
Several workers testify to their distress
Baye Mor Seck, a car painter in the Sofraco neighborhood, is worried about the serious economic and social consequences of this measure. He is asking the authorities to find a balance between urban development and the rights of workers and customers.
“When I heard the news, I was deeply shaken. Like me, many workers are affected by this operation… We are Senegalese citizens, and we have the right to work,” he exclaimed. He also regrets the lack of prior consultation, especially since the vehicles in question often belong to customers, which could lead to tensions.
For his part, Massamba Guèye Lô, a mechanic in Mbour 1, warns that moving professionals without support measures will plunge them into precariousness.
“What will become of all these young people and fathers who have only their work to provide for their families? This decision risks sending hundreds of workers into unemployment. We ask for more consideration and concrete solutions before any action is taken on the ground,” argued Mr. Lô.

Dans la zone de « Khelcom » dont il parle, il y a des domaines immenses, inoccupés ou clôturés par une poignée de propriétaires. Le mal du Sénégal c’est l’accaparement, les autorités doivent identifier ces terrains et les redistribuer aux jeunes travailleurs. Il y avait trop d’injustices, l’argent, le relation ou le statut social ne doivent pas être un moyen pour accaparer légalement les espaces communs. Parfois les propriétaires ne vivent même plus.
Ils ont vendu les terrains qu'on leur avait octroyés à Khelcom pour revenir squatter les environs de la gare routière défigurant au passage le cadre de vie des quartiers comme Grand standing et Hlm Route de Mbour.
Ouvrier automobile signifie-t-il mécanicien, tôlier etc. Où c est plus large?
