Drame en mer : Une pirogue de Saint-Louis chavire en eaux mauritaniennes, 4 pêcheurs portés disparus
The Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Economy announced, via press release, a serious accident that occurred at sea on the night of January 16-17, 2026. A Senegalese artisanal fishing pirogue, registered SL 1819 GN and named "Yaye Fatou Ndiaye", capsized after being struck by an unidentified vessel.
The boat, which was carrying ten (10) fishermen, had left Saint-Louis on Friday, January 16, at around 3 p.m. It was heading towards waters under Mauritanian jurisdiction, in accordance with the fishing protocol in force.
The accident occurred between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m., when the crew had repositioned themselves towards a mooring area to rest after several hours of work. It was at this moment that a collision with a vessel, whose identity remains to be determined, caused the pirogue to capsize.
Authorities are currently reporting a preliminary assessment indicating a critical situation for some of the crew. Six fishermen have been rescued and taken to hospitals.
Of the survivors, four were released after receiving treatment, while two remain under medical observation. Two fishermen are officially listed as missing. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported so far.
The Ministry assures that search operations are actively continuing, in close coordination with the relevant services, to try to find the missing persons. While expressing its solidarity with the victims, the supervisory authority affirms that it is closely monitoring the evolving situation.
