Droits des femmes : Jgen Sénégal lance les préparatifs des Assises nationales en plaidant pour l’union de la société civile

The feminist association Jgen Senegal organized, this Friday, November 28, 2025, with its partners, a preparatory workshop for the National Citizens' Conference on the Rights of Women and Girls in Senegal scheduled for 2026. This workshop constitutes the first structuring step of the process.

This event brought together key organizations such as the Association of Senegalese Women Jurists (AJS), the Y'en Marre movement, the National Human Rights Organization (ONDH), Amnesty International and the Senegalese Social Forum, in order to officially establish the Preparatory Committee.

According to the executive president of Jgen Senegal, Maïmouna Astou Yade, women's rights should no longer be defended exclusively by women's organizations, but by the whole of civil society.

"What we want is to bring together all the vital forces of civil society, citizens' organizations, women's rights organizations, peasant organizations, traditional organizations, to give much greater power to this advocacy that we are currently carrying out at the national level," she said.

Ms. Yade emphasized that the joint mobilization of all organizations will have a much greater impact in achieving the common goal: equal rights and the advancement of women. She noted that the Natangué Jabott project (contributing to the well-being of the family), a feminist and inclusive citizen initiative, is central to this approach.

The representative of the Association of Senegalese Women Jurists (AJS), Madjiguène Bakhoum Sarr, recalled that the AJS initiated a symposium on the rights of women and children in 2019 and identified discriminatory provisions against them. Recommendations were made, but the authorities have not yet taken the necessary steps to implement them.

"It is therefore necessary today that there be this movement and this demand at the national level so that we can effectively revise these discriminatory provisions, because these are human rights issues," she suggested.

Ms. Sarr stated that despite the existence of a favorable legal framework, the rights of women and children are not respected due to the lack of effective implementation of laws and decrees. According to her, discriminatory provisions, such as Articles 196, 277, 152, and 111, infringe upon the rights of women and children.

These 2026 conferences aim to give more weight to women's advocacy, particularly on the revision of discriminatory provisions in codes and regulations.
