Éboulements meurtriers à Afrigold : L’orpaillage clandestin défie encore la mort
Despite the series of tragedies in recent weeks, illegal gold mining continues to claim lives in the Afrigold area. Repeated landslides, which have already caused numerous casualties, have clearly not deterred illegal miners from continuing their activities in this area, which is recognized as extremely dangerous.
The site, infamous since December 17, 2025, when seven gold miners lost their lives in a tunnel collapse, was again the scene of a fatal accident on January 25, 2026, causing three more deaths. These successive tragedies seemed to have finally raised the alarm about the major risks involved.
But last night, around 3 a.m., another landslide occurred in the same area. The death toll has been reported to be a Malian national, caught in the landslide while illegally working at the site.
These recurring incidents highlight the persistence of illegal gold mining, despite the obvious dangers and formal prohibitions. Lured by the hope of quick money, many young people continue to risk their lives.
This latest loss of life reignites the debate surrounding the security of the Afrigold perimeter and the fight against the illegal occupation of mining sites. It also underscores the need for sustainable solutions to regulate artisanal gold mining and prevent these recurring tragedies.
