Effets néfastes du changement climatique : 107 ha de mil et d'arachide anéantis à Keur Magueye Ndao
Women farmers in the village of Keur Maguèye Ndao, in the commune of Chérif Lo (Tivaouane department), are devastated after climate change damaged their 107 hectares of millet and peanut fields. "Significant damage has been recorded in the fields (54 hectares of peanuts and 53 hectares of millet) in Keur Maguèye Ndao, caused by the excessive soil depletion combined with the adverse effects of climate change," laments Julie Cissé, executive director of the Group for Initiatives for Social Progress/West Africa Region-GIPS/WAR, a network of women farmers in peri-urban and rural areas.
In front of the disaster-stricken populations who are relying on divine will, Ms. Cissé considers the situation as a tangible example that summarizes the concrete proposals that were put on the table during the Climate and Development days held recently in Diamniadio.
These are devout and dignified people who say they need support in their agricultural activities. "It is thanks to their advocacy that the village chief of Keur Maguèye Ndao agreed to grant three more hectares to the women of the area."
“For us at Initiative Kilimanjaro, this is yet another tangible proof that our authorities, village chiefs, and traditional and religious leaders are listening to women’s concerns.” But, she lamented, “it’s still a blank canvas.”
Hence the impassioned appeal that Julie Cissé and her sisters are making to technical and financial partners, for "the enclosure of the agricultural perimeter and finding a solution to the water problem, such as a simplified drip irrigation system, in addition to the need for adequate equipment, appropriate funding and capacity building training."
They are appealing to President Diomaye Faye and his government for various state programs aimed at empowering youth and women. The women of Keur Maguèye Ndao welcome the finalization of the framework law for women's economic empowerment.
