Ziguinchor : La dengue fait un mort, les autorités médicales en alerte
The Ziguinchor medical region has issued an epidemic alert following the detection of the first cases of dengue fever recorded in the area in years. This unprecedented situation has already resulted in one death.
According to Bernard Diatta, focal point of the Expanded Programme on Immunization and responsible for epidemiological surveillance, the figures are as follows: Samples taken: 18; confirmed positive cases: 10; recorded deaths: 1.
The victim, a student, had a history of asthma and sickle cell disease, health factors that may have aggravated the progression of the disease.
Bernard Diatta emphasized the difficulty of diagnosis, as dengue presents symptoms similar to those of malaria. Samples from suspected cases are sent daily to the Pasteur Institute for confirmation.
He confirmed the exceptional nature of this situation for the region: "I have worked for the regional medical service since 2011 and I have never been aware of a single case of dengue in Ziguinchor. This is the first time the region has faced this situation."
Medical authorities believe that the first cases detected were mostly imported.
Faced with the risk of the spread of the mosquito-borne virus, health authorities are calling on the population to mobilize collectively and adopt strict protective measures: avoid mosquito bites, eliminate larval breeding grounds (stagnant water), sleep under mosquito nets, and consult quickly in case of fever or suspicious symptoms (joint pain).
The Ziguinchor region is now engaged in a race against time to contain the disease and prevent a wider spread.
