The ten pirogues belonging to Senegalese fishermen and seized in Cacheu, Guinea-Bissau, are expected to be returned to their owners this Monday. The country's authorities and mediators from the National Union of Artisanal Fishermen of Senegal (UNAPAS) have reached an agreement for a positive outcome. L'Observateur, which broke the story, reports that the agreement stipulates the Senegalese will have to pay a fine of 5 million CFA francs to recover their property.
The boats in question were intercepted in Guinea-Bissau waters on Tuesday, January 20. Coming from Cap Skirring, they were seized for lack of a license and use of monofilament nets, which are prohibited in the area.
The negotiations to secure their return were intense but "cordial," according to Madiarra Lakhoun, president of the local UNAPAS chapter, as reported by L'Observateur. He explained: "Our initial offer was between 3 and 4 million CFA francs. The Guinea-Bissau authorities rejected this and then demanded 5 million CFA francs from us."
Lakhoun indicates that the money should be paid this Monday. But, as L'Observateur reports, the 27 fishermen who were aboard the ten boats have already returned to Cap Skirring. "I must admit that our fellow fishermen have suffered greatly since the day the Guinea-Bissau coast guard seized their vessels in Cacheu," sighs the UNAPAS representative.
