The case of the death of a newborn at the Heinrich Lübke Regional Hospital in Diourbel has taken a decisive turn, with the arrest and detention of the midwife on duty at the time of the tragedy.
More than a month after the alleged medical scandal, on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, police officers from the Diourbel central police station, under the command of Chief Superintendent Younouss Diédhiou, arrested midwife F. Diarra, a suspect in the tragedy, according to exclusive information obtained by Seneweb. The head midwife on duty was brought before the Diourbel High Court. She is being prosecuted for failing to assist a person in danger and endangering the lives of others. The public prosecutor, Amary Faye, ordered her detention.
Unless her trial is postponed, F. Diarra will be tried in flagrante delicto on Thursday, November 27, two days after her detention.
The tragedy occurred on the night of Friday, October 17, 2025, between 9:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. A pregnant woman arrived at the Heinrich Lübke Hospital in Diourbel for an obstetric emergency. Despite the imminent delivery, the maternity staff reportedly refused to admit her, citing a lack of available beds. The patient was then turned away from the hospital.
In dramatic circumstances, the woman ended up giving birth in front of the hospital's entrance. The newborn reportedly died as a result of this lack of proper medical care.
A few days after the events, the medical authorities took a first disciplinary measure: the midwife who was on duty the night of the tragedy was temporarily suspended, pending the conclusions of the internal investigation conducted by the Ministry of Health.
The autopsy findings
The judicial inquiry includes an autopsy of the newborn's body. However, the forensic pathologist encountered a major difficulty: the advanced state of decomposition of the body makes it impossible to determine whether it was a stillborn or not.
Faced with this impossibility of establishing with certainty the causal link, the investigators, on the instructions of the judicial authority, ruled out the offense of involuntary manslaughter.
The midwife's version
When questioned by the police, F. Diarra, the accused midwife, stated that she had directed the patient to another health facility due to a lack of available places in the maternity ward of the Heinrich Lübke regional hospital.
According to her statements, after the woman gave birth in front of the hospital entrance, she was admitted and cared for in the maternity ward. The midwife stated that she then asked another patient, whose condition was considered less critical, to give up her bed to the woman and her newborn.
