Insolite à Thiès : elle vole des tissus à Rufisque pour les distribuer lors d’un “yebbi” à Touba

A rather unusual case recently shook the Senghor district of Thiès, involving a 54-year-old street food vendor, A. Diop. She was arrested by officers from the 1st arrondissement police station in Thiès for stealing fabrics worth an estimated 1.8 million CFA francs.

It all began with the happy news of a child's birth. A. Diop, 54, a small restaurant owner living in the Senghor neighborhood of Thiès, learned that her daughter had just given birth at her marital home in Touba. To properly prepare for her grandson's baptism, the woman decided to buy fabric, but in a rather unorthodox way.

The robbery at the Rufisque central market

A. Diop went to the central market of Rufisque, to the shop of the merchant M. Sow. Taking advantage of a moment of inattention (the owner had been away to perform his ablutions), she stole "getzner" and "thioup" type fabrics for a total value of 1.8 million CFA francs according to Seneweb sources close to the prosecutor's office.

But as the saying goes, "no crime is ever perfect." In her haste, the thief leaves her pouch containing incriminating evidence in the shop: a copy of her national identity card and a receipt clearly stating her name and mobile phone number.

Filing a complaint and the investigation

Armed with this evidence, the merchant Sow went to the Rufisque Central Police Station's Urban Security Unit to file a complaint. The police officers directed him to the Thiès 1st Arrondissement police station, the suspect's place of residence in the Cité Senghor neighborhood.

The investigation, led by Commissioner Moussa Fall's men, quickly resulted in the arrest of A. Diop. Confronted with the facts during her interrogation, which was recorded in the official report, the woman in her fifties readily admitted her guilt.

The distribution of tissues during the "yebbi"

The investigation revealed a detail that was both comical and troubling: the alleged thief had already distributed all the stolen fabrics in Touba during the "yebbi" (a traditional gesture of gratitude offered at a baptism). According to Seneweb sources, the stolen fabrics were thus used to honor the guests and celebrate the arrival of the newborn.

Charged with theft, A. Diop was brought before the Thiès High Court last Wednesday.
