The artisans of Kaffrine held a press conference to alert local and national authorities to the difficulties they have faced since relocating to the new craft site. Located on a five-hectare site, donated by the municipality in 2022, it still lacks essential amenities, while many artisans are now facing temporary unemployment following the demolition operations carried out in the town.
According to Ngouda Diankha, secretary general of the Force Ouvrier movement in Kaffrine, "thanks to the mayor's leadership, Kaffrine now stands out among Senegal's municipalities for the vitality of its crafts, on a site of over 5 hectares housing 282 artisans." He acknowledged, however, that "much work remains to be done" to improve the artisans' working conditions.
For his part, Pape Seignan, president of the Kaffrine Young Workers Association and the House of Artisans, painted a worrying picture of the situation. “As you know, this site was allocated to us by the Kaffrine town hall in 2022, but since then, the work has been dragging on. There is no electricity, the workshops are not marked out, there are no toilets, and it is not yet paved.” He added that “many of us lost our places during the clearing operation.” Faced with this situation, he made “a solemn appeal to local and national authorities to come to our aid so that we can move to this site as soon as possible.”
The artisans are therefore demanding basic infrastructure, electricity, water, toilets, paving, and demarcation of workshops in order to be able to work in decent conditions.
“Being a craftsman in Senegal today is not easy,” emphasizes Ngouda Diankha, who calls for “joining forces to strengthen this sector, a vital engine of our country’s economic and social development.” He believes that “this is the first time a genuine policy has been implemented to support our field,” but hopes that “craftsmen will be fully involved in the decisions that affect them.”
For Babacar Ndiaye, coordinator of the Force Ouvrier movement in the municipality of Kaffrine, the difficulties in the sector are real: “Even though we have a site, this site lacks everything. One thing is clear: we, the artisans of Kaffrine, remain united for the cause of Kaffrine's crafts.”
The speakers all called for solidarity and mobilization of stakeholders around their common platform, so that Kaffrin's crafts can truly play their role in local development.
While waiting for concrete solutions, the artisans of Kaffrine continue to face precarious conditions, hoping for a quick reaction from the authorities to make functional this site which was supposed to symbolize a new beginning for the artisanal sector of the region.
