Kédougou : la série noire continue dans les mines artisanales, l'effroyable bilan
The artisanal gold mining sector in eastern Senegal has been struck by another tragedy. On Monday evening, around 11 p.m., a 16-year-old Guinean boy died following the collapse of a mine shaft in Kharakhéna, in the commune of Bembou, Kédougou region. The young victim's body was recovered from the rubble by the gendarmerie before being taken to the morgue of the regional hospital, reports Le Quotidien.
This death adds to an already alarming toll. According to the newspaper of the Avenir Communication group, this is the sixteenth victim recorded at this single site in the space of three months.
This situation highlights the dangers of illegal mining operations, often described as veritable "death traps," where even the most basic safety standards are ignored. Beyond the risks associated with artisanal mines, this tragedy reignites the debate on the exploitation of minors in gold mining sites. Many teenagers, often from neighboring countries, are involved in these particularly dangerous activities, the same source points out. Faced with this situation, local communities and human rights organizations are calling on the authorities to strengthen site surveillance and intensify the fight against child labor in artisanal mines.
