Kolda : Les jeunes filles recommandent l'âge du mariage à partir de 18 ans

In Fouladou, young girls are asking the authorities to raise the age of marriage from 18, contrary to the Family Code, which sets it at 16. And thanks to the Kolda Adolescent Counseling Center (CCA), which participates in the education and awareness raising of young girls, female genital mutilation, excision, child or forced marriage, and early pregnancies are combated by this center, which trains girls in responsibility and leadership.

On the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child, Kolda vibrated to the rhythm of young girls' pleas. In a space largely open to the public, they proclaimed their right to live until the age of 18, before considering marriage.

According to Oumou Sabaly, a girl leader, it is from the age of 18 that girls truly begin to be responsible and to better discern between good and evil. "When you are a student, it is at 18 that you find yourself at least in your final year of high school with a head full of knowledge to understand the world," she declared.

For these girls at the teen center, it is impossible for a girl to get married at 16 and properly manage her marital home. Oumou Sabaly and her peers are therefore calling on the state to raise the age of marriage for girls from 16 to 18. The girls of Fouladou intend to use this plea to protect children and minors.

Another grievance raised on the occasion of this day: young girls in the Kolda region are often victims of late birth registration, which handicaps them in the entrance exams for schools like Mariama Ba in Gorée. This discrimination is something that Oumou Sabaly blames on the state and parents.

"After brilliant results in the CM2 class, the best girls from Fouladou saw their dream of going to Mariama Bà extinguished, because of a court extract."

This is why they are asking the authorities to review this discriminatory school law that continues to marginalize the young girls of Kolda, while urging parents to ensure their children's registration from birth. Moreover, three years ago, six girls from the Kolda academy were denied access to Mariama Ba because of court-ordered extracts.

With Babacar Sy and his team, the Kolda Teen Counseling Center provides the nation with girls capable of responsible communication and leadership in various fields. Wednesdays at the CCA are opportunities for discussion on social ills and good social etiquette. Girls and peer leaders are mentored and supported in this regard.

Furthermore, sanitary napkins are distributed en masse in schools and are the work of the CCA to guarantee the social security of girls at school.

Oui, 16 ans, c’est trop jeune pour se marier, et malheureusement, même cet âge minimum n’est pas respecté.
    Il faut dénoncer ces pratiques.
