La Société de physique du Sénégal réaffirme son engagement pour la souveraineté scientifique
The Senegalese Physical Society (SPS), a learned society bringing together teacher-researchers and professionals in physics, has renewed its Executive Board, following its general assembly held at the Assane Seck University of Ziguinchor (UASZ).
On this occasion, Professor Oumar Ka, from the Faculty of Sciences and Techniques of Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (UCAD), passed the baton to Professor Senghane Mbodj of Alioune Diop University of Bambey (UADB), newly elected president of the SPS.
During his six-year term, in accordance with the SPS guidelines, the outgoing president and his team carried out numerous science outreach activities in colleges and high schools, talent identification and promotion through the organization of the National Physics Competition as well as scientific symposia, conferences and colloquia.
A true unifying tool for physics teacher-researchers in Senegal, the SPS promotes volunteering and service to the community. It has strongly contributed to the creation and operation of the West African Physical Society (SOAPHYS), which brings together sister learned societies from Burkina Faso, Benin, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo and, more recently, Mauritania.
Since its creation in 2017, SOAPHYS has established itself as an instrument of regional integration, scientific diplomacy and research promotion, notably through its scientific journal JSOAPHYS.
The new management team is committed to sustaining and building upon the achievements, expanding the SPS, providing it with a better structured internal administration and ensuring sustainable financial autonomy.
At the heart of its vision, the Senegalese Physical Society places particular emphasis on the strategic need for a country to have its own scientists and technicians, capable of designing, adapting and implementing endogenous solutions to development challenges.
In this perspective, it intends to position itself as a true force for reflection, proposal and scientific production at the service of the State of Senegal, in order to contribute effectively and sustainably to the success of public policies, particularly in education, and to the training of young Senegalese and Africans competent in scientific and technical disciplines.
