Maimouna Ndour - Babacar Fall : l’ancien ministre Babacar Gaye condamne la censure et la répression de la pensée libre
Former Minister of State and Member of Parliament Babacar Gaye, head of the Mankoo Mucc movement, denounced the arrests of Maïmouna Ndour Faye, director of the 7TV channel, and Babacar Fall, editor-in-chief of RFM radio. They were arrested after broadcasting an interview with journalist Madiambal Diagne, who is currently in France and subject to an international arrest warrant.
In a public statement, Babacar Gaye questions the meaning of these arrests, which he describes as an "arbitrary measure." According to him, simply giving a voice to an individual whose rights have not been deprived by a court decision cannot be considered a crime.
The leader of Mankoo Mucc believes these arrests reflect an authoritarian drift and a serious attack on press freedom. "By targeting media professionals with such ferocity, the government is demonstrating a worrying timidity," he emphasizes, before adding that this political and moral showdown "further weakens the government's credibility."
Babacar Gaye calls for respect for the right to information and the independence of the media, essential pillars of any democracy. He reaffirms his movement's position, which offers its full support to the arrested journalists and demands their immediate and unconditional release. He adds, "Senegal cannot be built on fear, censorship, and the repression of free thought." For him, the press is not an adversary of the government but rather "a reflection of the democratic vitality of a nation."
