Maïmouna Ndour Faye-Babacar Fall : les organisations de défense des droits humains réagissent
The African Meeting for the Defense of Human Rights (RADDHO), the Senegalese League for Human Rights (LSDH), ARTICLE 19 Senegal/West Africa and Amnesty International Senegal expressed their deep concern following the arrest and detention of journalists Maïmouna Ndour Faye, director of 7TV television, and Babacar Fall, director of information at RFM radio.
This measure follows interviews given by journalists to a person wanted by the justice system.
According to the organizations, "the interview broadcast by RFM contained no remarks likely to disturb public order or threaten state security, and all information relating to this legal case is already widely disseminated by national and international media."
"The organizations are calling for the immediate release of the two journalists and urge the State of Senegal to respect its international commitments regarding freedom of the press and freedom of expression," the statement reads.
They also "condemn the intrusion of security forces into media premises, the arbitrary cutting of the signal and the interruption of live broadcasts, considering these acts as a serious attack on freedom of the press and the right to information."
Finally, they call on the authorities to prioritize self-regulation to prevent abuses, and to strengthen the powers and resources of CORED so that it can fully play its role in media oversight and regulation.
