Marché Tilène : Violents affrontements entre forces de l’ordre et marchands ambulants sur l’avenue Blaise Diagne
Violent clashes broke out on Wednesday, January 7, near the Tilène market on Blaise Diagne Avenue, pitting the defense and security forces (FDS) against street vendors.
According to witnesses at the scene, the clashes began when vendors were ordered to clear the public road. This operation is part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and mobility. The street vendors, refusing to leave their usual spots, resisted, leading to a rise in tension that quickly escalated into confrontations.
These incidents occurred within a very specific context. In an official statement, the prefect of the Dakar department informed the public of the commencement of road improvement and development works located near the sports facilities slated to host the 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG). These works are being managed by the Ministry of Infrastructure through AGEROUTE Senegal.
To this end, it was announced that starting Thursday, January 15, 2026, several traffic measures would come into effect, including the temporary closure of Blaise Diagne Avenue between the Abass Ndao Hospital roundabout and Rue 11 in the Medina district. Traffic will then be reduced to two-way flow on one lane of Boulevard de la Gueule Tapée.
Consequently, road users are advised to use streets 22 and 6 in the Medina as detour routes. Temporary signage will be deployed with the support of the police and traffic controllers to ensure compliance with the measures in place.
Motorists are also urged to exercise increased vigilance when approaching the work zone, to comply with signage and to strictly adhere to speed limits and safety instructions.
At the time of writing, the situation remains tense around the Tilène market, despite the deployment of a reinforced security system to restore order and secure the area of the future construction site.
