Matam : des chiens errants déciment la volaille
Stray dogs are attacking poultry in Matam. During the day, they feed on animal carcasses; at night, they devour poultry.
"A pack of dogs attacked the neighbor's turkeys and killed more than ten of them," says Ousmane. Ousmane runs a laundry in the house of the galliformes' owner, who was away at the time.
Alerted by the gurgling of turkeys and the growling of predators, he succeeded, with the help of neighbors, in chasing away the dogs which had unfortunately massacred some of the poultry.
Other residents report similar incidents occurring in various parts of the commune, where chickens and guinea fowl have been decimated by dogs. An octogenarian woman, passionate about raising guardian geese, living in the Tantadji district, reports having been attacked twice in a row by stray dogs between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.
In the city, Muslim worshippers report encountering stray dogs on their way early in the morning. They see these dogs as a real threat.
Faced with this situation, a breeding technician is calling for vigilance and serious action to address this issue. "The predatory instinct is a natural state that is part of a dog's genes, especially when it is hungry, but when dogs move in groups and perpetuate a series of attacks, there is cause for concern," he says.
