Progression alarmante des violences faites aux femmes au Sénégal : La prévalence atteint 32% en 2024

The latest statistics from the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD) and protection stakeholders reveal a worrying increase in violence against women and girls in Senegal. The prevalence of gender-based violence is considered "alarming" by organizations, as it shows a continuous worsening of the phenomenon: 27% in 2022, 31.9% in 2023, and 32% in 2024.

This increase, explained during a workshop organized by the African Media Network for Health and the Environment (Remapsen) in partnership with UN Women, is seen as a sign of increasingly visible and brutal violence. Female genital mutilation remains a reality in several regions, affecting 20.1% of girls and women nationally. In outlying areas, the rate can reach 80%.

This persistence is a major cause for concern, despite the joint efforts of the WHO, UNICEF and the government to eradicate this practice.

Explosion of femicides: eight cases recorded in six months

According to the statistics, "between January and July 2025, eight cases of femicide were recorded." These crimes, often accompanied by sexual violence, have sparked widespread outrage. The statistics also reveal significant regional differences: Fatick has the lowest rate at 15.1%, while Diourbel has the highest at 42.6%. These disparities highlight the importance of strategies tailored to each specific area.

The country is committed to new continental and international instruments. The African Convention on Violence Against Women, adopted in February 2025, is currently being ratified in Senegal. The Maputo Protocol and the Beijing Declaration are still considered key documents. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 5, 3, 10, 11, and 16) encourage states to strengthen equality, justice, and social protection. In addition, there are national strategies: GBV action plans, gender equity and equality strategies, women's empowerment strategies, and so on.
