RTS - Radio Télévision Sénégalaise
Senegal's public broadcaster, Radio Télévision Sénégalaise (RTS), is facing an internal crisis described as deeply concerning by several of its former executives. In a memorandum made public on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, they detail a deteriorating social climate and warn of its potential consequences for the public audiovisual service.
While presenting RTS as a central player in state communication and the preservation of the nation's audiovisual archives, the signatories state that the institution is going through a "profound crisis." They describe a "toxic" social climate marked by staff protests, which is affecting the operation of its radio and television channels as well as content production.
The authors believe this crisis extends beyond the company's internal framework and raises broader issues, including information sovereignty, the credibility of the public audiovisual service, and the preservation and promotion of the national archives.
They are therefore calling on the authorities to pay attention to the situation and engage in dialogue to restore a peaceful social climate.
The memorandum is signed by several former RTS executives, including Mariam Selly Kane, Ibrahima Souleymane Ndiaye, Lucky Patrick Mendy, and Seynabou Diop, along with other managers who have held positions in production, news, human resources, and technical departments within the company.
For context, the SYNPAP–SYNPICS union coalition at Radio Télévision Sénégalaise has called for a major mobilization scheduled for Thursday, April 23, 2026, starting at 8:30 AM in front of the Dakar Correctional Tribunal. The gathering aims to show support for five union officials facing defamation charges following a complaint filed by RTS Director General, Pape Alé Niang.
These workers have denounced opaque management, authoritarian decisions, and managerial misconduct.
