Saint Louis : La compagnie pétrolière Bp annonce l’installation d’un "village récifal artificiel"
British Petroleum (BP) announces the completion of the installation of an artificial reef off the coast of Saint-Louis. This represents an investment of approximately 3.2 billion CFA francs, which has enabled the creation of a reef located nearly 4 km from the coast of Saint-Louis, composed of ten sets of innovative cube and pyramid structures, explains the company which holds a majority stake in the Senegal-Mauritanian Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project.
"Designed for a lifespan of more than 99 years, this reef aims to strengthen marine biodiversity and support sustainable fishing practices, thus contributing to the long-term economic vitality of the coastal ecosystem and fisheries resources of Saint-Louis," Bp said in a press release seen by Seneweb.
The company emphasizes that the reef's design, developed in partnership with Kosmos Energy and Petrosen, incorporates solutions that respect the natural balance, such as a 3D textured surface inspired by the topography of the Ferlo desert and 1,500 locally sourced clay pots to enhance the habitat's complexity. In total, more than 400 artificial reef cubes will be installed, the company states.
“This artificial reef project illustrates our commitment to biodiversity, sustainable livelihoods and long-term value creation for the community. We are proud to collaborate with our partners and the people of Saint-Louis to bring this impactful initiative to fruition,” said Massaer Cissé, Vice President and General Manager of bp Senegal.
