With the Tabaski celebrations just days away, administrative authorities and livestock stakeholders in the Kédougou region are expressing considerable optimism. The latest figures released on May 26, 2026, reveal a supply level significantly exceeding this year's targets, indicating ample livestock availability at various sales points.

According to official statistics, the supply rate reached 134%, with a total of 16,995 small ruminants recorded in the region. This figure includes 13,533 sheep and 3,462 goats distributed among the departments of Kédougou, Salémata, and Saraya.

Specifically, the Kédougou department has 2,712 sheep and 240 goats, while Salémata has 5,110 sheep and 2,651 goats. The Saraya department, for its part, has 5,711 sheep and 571 goats.

The livestock services also specify that 1,186 sheep come from the regions of Tambacounda, Matam and Kaffrine, thus strengthening the local supply as the Eid al-Adha festival approaches.

The target set for the 2026 Tabaski campaign was 12,700 head of livestock. Current figures therefore show a significant surplus, confirming a better availability of livestock relative to expressed needs.

Compared to the same period in 2025, the authorities note a surplus of 1,736 subjects.

Furthermore, the Moussala border post continues to see a significant movement of livestock from neighboring countries. To date, 3,478 sheep have been recorded entering the country there.

Dakar remains the primary destination with 1,616 head of livestock transported to the capital. The town of Missirah Wadène follows with 1,105 sheep, while 578 head are destined for the Kédougou market.

However, there has been a decrease in sheep arrivals compared to last year. At the same time in 2025, the Moussala station recorded 7,494 sheep, more than double the current volume.

Despite this decline in imports, the authorities want to reassure people about the availability of livestock to allow the population to celebrate Tabaski in good conditions.
