An operation by the Research Brigade of the central police station of Guédiawaye last Sunday led to the dismantling of a suspected network specializing in the theft, receiving stolen motorcycles and trafficking in Indian hemp in the districts of Médina Gounass, Bagdad and Marché Boubess.
Six young men, aged 22 to 33—a shopkeeper, a mechanic, scrap metal dealers, a cart driver, and a tailor—were arrested in the act of selling motorcycles of dubious origin. They are SA Dramé, F. Sow, D. Dieng, B. Diouf, I. Diop, and S. Wone, according to L'Observateur. The newspaper notes that Wone was found in possession of 16 packets of marijuana during the search.
When questioned by investigators, the suspects claimed to have purchased the motorcycles without documents as part of a "trust transaction," a version deemed implausible by the police. The six young men were brought before the prosecutor and remanded in custody.
The case took an unexpected turn on Tuesday, according to the daily newspaper of the Groupe Futurs Médias (GFM), when a crowd of mothers, cart drivers, and motorcycle taxi drivers gathered near the police station to protest what they called the "arbitrary arrests" of "innocent people." As the suspects were being transferred to the Pikine-Guédiawaye courthouse, some protesters tried to block the vehicle, even clinging to the doors. The intervention of the Mobile Intervention Group (GMI) ultimately dispersed the crowd, the GFM newspaper reports.
