Yeumbeul : un charlatan vole 650 000 F CFA à sa cliente pendant un bain mystique
A marabout living in Yeumbeul, D. Sow (57 years old), was found guilty of charlatanism by the Pikine-Guédiawaye criminal court and sentenced to six months in prison.
According to L'Observateur, which attended the hearing, the defendant was being prosecuted for fraud and theft against Mr. Thiam, a seamstress who had come to ask for prayers for her new business.
The victim says she paid 250,000 CFA francs for prayers supposed to "attract prosperity" and underwent disturbing rituals, during which she had to partially undress for "mystical baths."
"He told me that I had to purify myself for my business to succeed," Mr. Thiam told the court. The marabout even offered to use his "seminal fluid" to "perfect the magic potion."
A few hours later, the complainant discovered that 650,000 CFA francs had disappeared from her purse and accused D. Sow of taking advantage of the ritual to rob her. "There was only him and me in the room. When I got home, the money was gone," she told the court.
In court, the marabout denied the charges. "I didn't steal anything. These are traditional baths performed in an altar, the khamb, nothing else," he tried to defend himself, while invoking vague "ancestral practices" to justify the ritual.
Due to a lack of material evidence, the court acquitted him of fraud and theft, but found him guilty of charlatanism. He was sentenced to six months in prison and must pay 150,000 CFA francs to the victim, in addition to the 500,000 CFA francs already reimbursed by her family, according to the daily newspaper of the Future Media Group.

Il faut que les Sénégalais arrêtent de consulter les charlatans pour un oui pour un non. Nous dépensons tellement d'argent dans ces conneries. Ce n'est pas ce qui développe notre pays, bien au contraire.
