BRÉSIL: LEONARDO JARDIM DÉMISSIONNE DE CRUZEIRO POUR PRÉSERVER SA "SANTÉ PHYSIQUE ET MENTALE"
Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim, 51, who had been working at Brazilian club Cruzeiro since February, announced his resignation on Monday ten months after his arrival in order to preserve his "physical and mental health".
"Coach Leonardo Jardim will not remain at the helm of the team for the 2026 season," the Belo Horizonte club wrote in a statement on X, specifying that the Portuguese is leaving the club with his assistants.
Tite was tipped to succeed him.
Linked to Raposa for another season with an option to renew, the former Monaco coach, with whom he won the French championship in 2017, also had to deal with the health problems of a close relative.
"The reasons are personal," he explained at a press conference, mentioning "warning signs" that prompted him to make the decision: "Jardim, slow down a bit, you need to take care of your physical and mental health," he emphasized.
His departure comes the day after Cruzeiro's elimination by Corinthians in the Brazilian Cup semi-finals. Jardim had succeeded Fernando Diniz, Brazil's short-lived manager in 2023, at the helm of Cruzeiro. According to Brazilian media, another former manager of the five-time world champions, Tite, 64, is expected to take over.
