Ismael Saibari, the Moroccan midfielder, went to the Senegal hotel on Monday to meet with Edouard Mendy, the Senegalese goalkeeper, to explain himself after stealing one of his towels during the AFCON final on Sunday.
Apologies in the bizarre towel incident. According to a video broadcast by Senegalese media outlets on X, Ismael Saibari went to the Senegalese team hotel on Monday, the day after the highly contentious Africa Cup of Nations final won by the Lions of Teranga against Morocco (1-0, after extra time), the host country. The match was marred by numerous incidents, one of which caused widespread confusion.
A long handshake
Several ball boys stole the towel belonging to Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Players, such as Achraf Hakimi (caught by El Hadji Malick Diouf) and Ismael Saibari, were also caught throwing a towel into the stands. Faced with these repeated thefts, Senegal's second-choice goalkeeper, Yehvann Diouf, positioned himself behind Mendy's goal to protect the towel and pass it to the starting goalkeeper whenever he asked.

This led to surreal scenes when the ball boys pulled him to the ground and then chased him, trying to retrieve the precious towel for incomprehensible reasons. Another astonishing image remains that of Ismael Saibari, standing in front of Diouf to prevent him from giving the towel to Mendy. The PSV Eindhoven midfielder, who had been substituted in stoppage time, came to explain himself to Edouard Mendy on Monday.
The content of the exchange between the two men has not been revealed. But the ten-second clip shows them shaking hands for a long time. After the match, Yehvann Diouf explained his rather unusual role as towel protector. "For me, they were just towels, nothing more, to dry gloves and faces," he explained. "Perhaps there's a bit of a fuss about these towels, but for me it's nothing special. I was just as surprised as you when I saw them try to take them. We saw with Nigeria that every time towels were put out, the stewards usually came around to collect them. I don't know why they did it, but it wasn't fair play on their part."
